About TOGK Northern NSW

Traditional Okinawan Goju-ryu Karaté-do Northern NSW has developed through the lineage of Senseis Chojun Miyagi (‘Gentlemen Warrior’) - Anichi Miyagi - Morio Higaonna - Graham Ravey. Sensei Rachel has received all gradings under Sensei Graham Ravey, and has trained for over 35 years.

We practice traditional karaté in a sincere, passionate, ego-less manner. This art is not only an effective self-defense system, but a whole way of approaching life. We uphold the old values of Respect, Humility, Self-discipline, Perseverance, and Self-awareness.

A variety of classes run for ages 6+, for all abilities, fitness levels, genders, and backgrounds. Beginners are most welcome and supported. ‘Junior’ classes are ages 6-12 yrs, while ‘Senior’ classes are for Teens & Adults.

We train in the gentle warrior way of life, using what we learn in the dojo to benefit our families and community. 'Go' (hard) - 'Ju' (soft) brings us balance in our responses to whatever confronts us in life.

Sensei Rachel Whiting, 4th Dan

Sensei began karate over 35 years ago at the age of 14, in a small country town north of Brisbane, Qld Australia. She attained her black belt at age 19, and has never stopped training, choosing to travel Australia and explore other styles while always maintaining her passion and practice in Goju-ryu.

She feels strongly about creating safety and empowerment in her community, supporting a diverse range of students to do so. All genders, cultures, fitness levels, and abilities are welcomed and encouraged.

Sensei teaches students to apply the deeper spiritual lessons of  Traditional Goju-ryu (hard-soft) to daily life, developing balance, calm, personal power and self-responsibility by responding from one's ‘centre.

Sensei also teaches self-defense courses, offers 'Wise Warriors' school programs, and is a trained Zen meditation teacher

We practice functional, intelligent, efficient self-defense that works for each unique student. Dojos are inclusive, friendly, challenging, disciplined places to learn and develop personal strength both externally and internally.
